About the Project
Postcards from Americans is a documentary portrait project examining our political landscape at its most fundamental level -- what do these issue mean, person by person?
Starting in January 2019, Katie Hayes Luke started asking one simple question: What would individual Americans say to the leader of this country?
She photographed people in her home state of Texas and asked them to write a letter to President Trump. Both the letter and the portrait are then mailed to the White House.
This visual representation of our collective American conversation includes voices from across the political spectrum and aims to bring together diverse perspectives. Not everyone in these images is an American, because the reality of our political landscape is that the policies enacted by our leadership have global impact, including on those who seek our shores.
Katie is expanding coverage nationwide in November of 2019 and will continue coverage through the 2020 presidential election.

In 2004, she attended the SALT Institute for Documentary Studies and in 2006 was part of the Blue Team at Eddie Adams. In 2009 she received an MA in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin.
